File - Associations ..

Associations .. -- This menu option allows the user
to associate files that have the same file extension
with a command or application. Then, when the file
is opened the associated command is invoked. An Icon
can also be associated to files with the same file
extension. For example, if an association is created
between .ps and the ghostview PostScript viewer,
whenever a .ps file is opened, ghostview is invoked
to view the content of the file. Selecting this menu
option, brings up a dialog box containing the current
          association list.

Adding an association -- Click the Add New .. button. A
dialog box appears. Type the file extension, leading
dots '.' are ignored. Type the icon filename (XPM - X pixmap
format) or click the browse (...) button to select an icon.
Type the command to be invoked when the associated file is
opened. $EDITOR and $file can be part of the command. $EDITOR
is substituted by the current value of the environment
variable $EDITOR (or vi if the $EDITOR variable has not
been set). $file is replaced by the name of file
being opened. The command '$EDITOR $file' opens the file by
invoking the current editor. The xterm window toggle directs
the file manager to invoke the command inside a terminal
emulator (xterm) window. The terminal emulator window
closes once the command completes. The pause after done
toggle forces the terminal window to remain open until the
user presses Enter. The File Extension field is the only
field required. Editing the icon field activates two buttons
(OK and Cancel). Click OK to accept the change or Cancel to
restore the previous field value. Accepting the changes made
to the icon field updates the icon shown on the icon box.

Removing an association -- Select the association entry to be
removed from the list. Click the Remove button.

Edit an association -- Select the association entry to be
edited. Click the Edit .. button. Editing the icon field
activates two buttons (OK and Cancel). Click OK to accept
the change or Cancel to restore the previous field value.
The Extension field is not editable.

To update the associations database of other Freedom
applications currently active, dismiss the Associations
dialog (if active) and select the Arrange Icons option.
